60 Children Rescued From Exploitative Domestic Work

A non-governmental organization, Childline Kenya, has successfully rescued 60 children from exploitative domestic labor in Kakamega County since the initiation of the Not Invisible Anymore (NIA) project in 2024, which seeks to eradicate exploitative Child Domestic Work (CDW).

In an interview with KNA in Kakamega town on Friday, Childline Kenya Projects officer, Erickson Ngetich, stated that exploitative Child Domestic Work (CDW) subjects children to hazardous conditions for extended periods. He noted that prolonged exposure and abuse deny children the chance to engage with their peers, thus hindering their self-development and growth. This rescue operation is part of the organization’s three-year initiative, ‘Not Invisible Anymore (NIA),’ funded by the Freedom Fund, which is dedicated to combating slavery and human trafficking. Ngetich mentioned that research conducted by the Freedom Fund’s Kenyan Hotspot Program revealed that a significant number of children in Kakamega are subjected to child domestic work and also experience abuse. According to Ngetich, the findings prompted the Freedom Fund to classify exploitative child domestic work and abuse as a form of slavery and servitude, given its mission to eliminate slavery and human trafficking. “We recognized it as a pressing issue because children are stripped of their rights: the right to attend school, the right to freely interact with others in the community, and so forth. We aimed to ensure that children comprehend that it is their right to return to school and socialize with others,” Ngetich elaborated. He further emphasized that child employment is illegal, noting that under the 2010 Kenyan Constitution, individuals under 18 should not be employed. “That was another motivating factor for our intervention to protect children from exploitative child domestic work,” he stated. Upon rescue, Ngetich explained that the organization evaluates the severity of the cases and notifies the appropriate authorities if immediate action is required.
