China and Russia Express Grief Over Raila as Kenya Initiates Burial Arrangements

China and Russia have added their voices to the increasing number of global leaders honoring former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died on Wednesday in Kochi, India, where he was receiving medical treatment.

Odinga’s passing at the age of 80 has sent shockwaves throughout Africa and beyond, eliciting condolences from leaders, diplomats, and citizens who recognized him as a visionary reformer, a beacon of democratic resilience, and a committed Pan-Africanist.
In Nairobi, the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, conveyed Beijing’s profound sorrow regarding the news, referring to Odinga as “an old friend of the Chinese people” who significantly contributed to the development of strong relations between China and Kenya. “Deeply saddened by the passing of former Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Odinga,” Ambassador Guo stated in a formal announcement. “As an old friend of the Chinese people, he made substantial contributions to enhancing China–Kenya relations and fostering friendly exchanges between our two nations. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. May he rest in peace.” Odinga, who made multiple visits to China throughout his extensive career, played a crucial role in bolstering Nairobi–Beijing collaboration, especially during his time as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 — a period marked by significant infrastructure partnerships established under Kenya’s Vision 2030 development initiative. ‘Exceptional Kenyan’ From Moscow, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Kenya also released a sincere condolence message, characterizing Odinga as an “exceptional and esteemed Kenyan and African statesman.” “The Embassy of Russia extends its heartfelt condolences on the passing of the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga — an exceptional and esteemed Kenyan and African statesman and political leader,” the statement declared. “A true veteran of Kenyan politics who devoted his life to fostering national unity, democracy, and good governance.
