Employees at a Japanese restaurant are raising concerns about mistreatment, inadequate pay, and are threatening to strike
Employees at Chekafe Restaurant, situated along Kauria Close off Muthangari Road, express dissatisfaction despite catering to high-profile guests. According to a group of current and former employees, they assert that management is unaware of their daily needs. They claim that even though the hotel serves esteemed guests and generates millions of shillings, the staff receives insufficient wages. Reports indicate that in addition to low pay, salaries are often disbursed late and sometimes in arrears, making life exceedingly challenging for employees who arrive early and leave late without overtime compensation, despite their extended hours of work. The management fails to provide adequate days off, and when an employee is ill and misses work, their pay for that day is withheld. Furthermore, employees are prohibited from joining any union to advocate for their rights. The morale among employees is at a significant low, and unless union representatives in Nairobi intervene, they will continue to endure their hardships in silence. It is alleged that management has enlisted political leaders for protection, who are compensated handsomely to safeguard their interests, while senior management is also believed to be compromised. Now, the employees are threatening to cease work to compel management to prioritize their welfare. Secret meetings have reportedly taken place, and sources indicate that the staff plans to initiate a go-slow, followed by a strike that could disrupt the hotel's operations.
