EPRA Introduces New Rules and Regulations to Enhance Efficiency

Kenya's energy and petroleum sectors are poised for significant transformation following the introduction of new regulations by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), which aim to enhance efficiency, transparency, and sustainable growth.

EPRA's Director General (DG), Daniel Kiptoo, remarked that this new framework represents a significant milestone in modernizing the country's energy governance to meet increasing demand and attract investment. "These regulations are strategic measures intended to manage Kenya's expanding energy requirements, align sector priorities with national objectives, and ensure that every Kenyan has access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy," he stated. Additionally, Kiptoo emphasized that Kenya's advancements in expanding energy access and diversifying its energy mix must now be complemented by smarter planning and efficient energy utilization. The DG made these comments in Nairobi during a media roundtable organized by EPRA to discuss the newly gazetted Energy and Petroleum Regulations from the past year, where he underscored that with the country's rapid economic growth, urbanization, and industrialization, there is a pressing need for improved planning and the adoption of cleaner, more efficient solutions that will ensure a resilient and inclusive energy system. Among the key highlights of the event was the launch of the Energy Net Metering Regulations 2024, which permit consumers generating renewable energy, known as prosumers, to feed surplus electricity into the national grid and receive credits. Kiptoo characterized this initiative as a transformative development, stating that it opens opportunities for small-scale investors to engage in power generation while facilitating Kenya's transition to a low-carbon economy. In a similar vein, he noted that the Energy Solar Water Heating Regulations 2025, a revision of previous rules, are designed to improve safety and quality standards in solar water heating systems, a step he noted will decrease reliance on electricity for heating and reduce costs for households.
