Former PM Raila Odinga’s body rerouted to Kasarani as swelling crowds force change of plans

The remains of the late Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga have been redirected to the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani due to the large crowds that rendered the initially planned transfer impractical.

The plans to transport the body from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Lee Funeral Home for final arrangements prior to the public viewing at Parliament were scrapped as the crowd situation escalated. On Thursday morning, tens of thousands of Kenyans gathered outside the Parliament buildings and along major city roads in anticipation of the arrival of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for public viewing. The overwhelming turnout compelled National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and his deputy Gladys Shollei to address the mourners from within the parliamentary grounds, urging them to maintain calm and order. The crowds were eager to see the casket after a brief stop at Lee Funeral Home, where Raila’s body was to be prepared for the official lying-in-state. Senator Ole Kina from Narok, along with MPs Otiende Omolo, Tim Wanyonyi, Millicent Odhiambo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, approached the gates to appeal to the youth not to climb the barriers. In a notable display, MPs Babu Owino and Otiende Omolo ascended the main parliamentary gates to address the crowd directly. A similar situation unfolded along Mombasa Road, where Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga spoke to large groups of mourners, urging them to exercise patience and maintain order. Meanwhile, operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were temporarily suspended following a security breach during the arrival of Raila Odinga’s remains. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) reported that a surge of mourners accessed restricted areas, necessitating a temporary closure of the airport to restore order. "KCAA informs the public that operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have been temporarily halted due to an ongoing security situation following the arrival of the remains of the late Raila.
