Former Ruto Minister Commends Conclusion of Kenya’s ‘Misadventure’ in Haiti Following UN Vote
Former Senior Economic Adviser to the President, Moses Kuria, has expressed his approval of a UN mandate for a Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti, asserting that this decision brings to an end what he referred to as Kenya’s “misadventure” in the Caribbean nation. Kuria lauded the UN Security Council for passing Resolution 2793, which authorizes the GSF for a duration of 12 months under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, effectively superseding the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) whose mandate is set to expire on October 2. “I commend the UN Security Council for the resolution to establish a Global Force for Haiti. This should now conclude the Kenyan unilateral mission and terminate the misadventure,” Kuria stated on Wednesday. The outspoken former minister called upon Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to reassign the returning Kenyan officers to the streets of Nairobi to assist in addressing the escalating insecurity. “I urge the Inspector General to deploy the returning forces to the streets of Nairobi to put an end to the daylight muggings and pickpocketings,” he added. Kuria has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Kenya’s involvement in Haiti in recent weeks. On September 24, he directly accused former US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman of influencing what he characterized as Kenya’s “misadventure” in leading the MSS. In a statement, Kuria claimed that Whitman, who held her position in Nairobi from 2022 to 2024, exerted excessive influence over Kenya’s foreign policy, including the deployment of police officers to Haiti. “Ambassador Meg Whitman effectively governed Kenya for two years. The Haiti misadventure was among the numerous personal decisions she made. Anthony Blinken was powerless in her presence. Kenya will bear the consequences of Meg’s reign of terror for a long time to come,” Kuria asserted.
