Government Constructs a World-Class Kidney Transplant Facility in Nairobi
The government is in the process of building a kidney transplant and dialysis treatment center in Nairobi, aimed at alleviating the need for Kenyans to seek kidney treatment overseas. The state-of-the-art, four-story East Africa Centre of Excellence in Nephrology and Urology (EAKI), located next to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), will specialize in kidney transplant surgeries, dialysis, training, and research. During a briefing with a team from the National Government Development, Regional Implementation Coordination and Management Committee (NGD-RICMC), led by Nairobi Regional Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo, who visited the site to review the ongoing construction, Project Manager Dr. Hossan Ajuk indicated that the Level 6-B facility is anticipated to be completed by the end of November this year. Dr. Ajuk noted that this facility is one of seven centers of excellence established within the East African Community, strategically located across various countries to address the rising challenge of non-communicable diseases in the region. "This institution will cater to Kenyans and clients from the entire East African Community. The management is committed to ensuring that patients receive prompt attention and that staff respond swiftly to their needs," he remarked. Other East African nations that have chosen to establish centers of excellence in healthcare include Tanzania, which is setting up a heart center; Uganda, which is developing a cancer center; Rwanda, which will have two centers focused on vaccines and medical science; and Burundi, which has opted for a nutrition center. In addition, South Sudan has decided to establish a regional center of excellence dedicated to climate change mitigation. This initiative is part of the East African Community's efforts.
