Government Initiates A Groundbreaking Program To Revitalize Nairobi’s Rivers And Urban Environment

The Nairobi county government has reiterated its dedication to the ongoing Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme, a collaborative initiative involving multiple agencies aimed at restoring the city’s primary waterways into clean, accessible, and economically viable corridors. During an inspection of the Kamukunji regeneration site, the County Executive for Green Nairobi, Maureen Njeri, declared that the project signifies a crucial advancement in rehabilitating riparian lands impacted by pollution and encroachment. "This project signifies a long-awaited chance for Nairobi to reshape its environmental narrative through the revitalization of its rivers," she stated. Njeri emphasized that the county government, via the Green Nairobi Department, is working closely with the Nairobi Rivers Commission to offer technical support, ensure access to land areas along the river corridors, and manage waste as well as supervise ongoing activities. Moreover, she elaborated that the city’s three principal rivers—Nairobi, Mathare, and Ngong—have experienced significant pollution over the years due to rapid urban growth, insufficient sewer infrastructure, and illegal dumping practices. The regeneration strategy includes the construction of a modern trunk sewer line, marking the first major upgrade since the 1970s to enhance wastewater management. "We are establishing a substantial trunk sewer that will extend along the river, replacing outdated networks that have surpassed their functional lifespan," she remarked. At Kamukunji, the site of the historic Saba Saba rallies, the project will convert the area into a recreational park featuring playgrounds, sports facilities, and landscaped gardens.
