Governors Call Emergency Meeting Over Kahiga’s Remarks On Raila’s Death
The Council of Governors has convened an urgent extraordinary meeting in response to the controversial statements made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga concerning the death of opposition leader Raila Odinga. In a strongly articulated statement, the CoG distanced itself from Governor Kahiga’s remarks, labeling them as “personal views that do not represent the position of the Council.” “In light of the aforementioned, I have called for an urgent Extra-Ordinary Council Meeting to take place tomorrow (Wednesday) morning to discuss these unfortunate comments, and a further statement will be issued,” stated CoG Chairman Ahmed Abdullahi. Governor Kahiga, who also serves as the CoG Vice-Chairman, has faced widespread backlash after he remarked during a funeral speech that the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on October 15 was an ‘answered prayer’ for the Mt. Kenya region, claiming that President William Ruto had redirected resources to Nyanza at the expense of Kikuyu. Leaders from the late Raila’s ODM party, including deputy leader Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa), James Orengo (Siaya), and fellow Mt. Kenya governors such as Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Cecilly Mbarire (Embu), and Lee Kinyanjui (Trade Cabinet Secretary) condemned the comments as insensitive and tribal, calling for an apology during this period of national mourning. “The statement attributed to the Nyeri Governor is regrettable and extremely unfortunate. It reflects a narrow mindset that thrives on isolation as a means of survival. It neither captures the national sentiment nor contributes positively to a nation in mourning,” Kinyanjui remarked. Former Chief Justice David Maraga described the comments as abhorrent and a breach of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. “As a campaign guided by the Ukatiba Philosophy, we wish to remind Governor Mutahi Kahiga of Nyeri County that Article 73 (1) of the Constitution mandates a State Officer to “demonstrate respect for the people; and bring honour to the nation and dignity to the office,” Maraga stated.
