Heartbreak and Disorder: Thousands Flood JKIA Disrupting Raila's State Reception

A scene of chaos erupted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday morning as a multitude of mourners gathered to receive the remains of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away in India on Wednesday.

Crowds, brandishing twigs and Kenyan flags, filled the airport's perimeter, singing songs of liberation and chanting "Baba! Baba!" as Odinga's body was unloaded from flight RAO001, the Kenya Airways plane that brought him back from Kochi. Upon the plane's arrival, emotions ran high. Some mourners lay on the tarmac in grief, while others blew whistles and horns. Groups of boda boda riders circled the airport, their motorcycles adorned in the national colors. Supporters broke through security barriers to take selfies near the aircraft, interrupting a scheduled State Reception led by President William Ruto. As the turmoil escalated, Ruto's security team canceled the official reception of the body, with the Head of State retreating to the presidential pavilion alongside Ida, Odinga's widow. An army carriage left the airport as security personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Youth Service (NYS), and ODM party marshals struggled to manage the surging crowd, which created a traffic jam around the airport and delayed the convoy transporting Odinga's body to Lee Funeral Home. The body is set to lie in state at Parliament Buildings later on Thursday for public viewing, in preparation for Friday's State Funeral Service at Nyayo National Stadium and the burial on Sunday in Bondo, Siaya County.
