KAA Orders 2-Hour Shutdown of JKIA Airspace for Security Re-Screening Following Breach by Raila Supporters
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has declared a temporary closure of the airspace above Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to facilitate enhanced security measures after the arrival of the remains of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. As per KAA, the airspace closure, effective from 10:26 AM to 12:26 PM, is a precautionary step aimed at ensuring maximum safety and order during this special operation. "This critical measure is intended to support an enhanced security rescreening operation following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya," stated Mohamud Gedi, the Acting Managing Director and CEO of KAA. "The safety and security of our passengers, staff, and all airport users is our utmost priority, and this action reflects our steadfast commitment to upholding the highest security standards." The Authority has advised passengers with flights scheduled during the closure period to reach out to their respective airlines for updated flight information and potential adjustments to their travel arrangements. Gedi also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused, emphasizing that this measure was essential to maintain both national security and aviation safety. The temporary suspension of air operations coincided with the arrival of the remains of the veteran opposition leader, whose death has elicited national and international tributes. Emotions remain heightened, with thousands of his supporters gathering at JKIA to receive his remains. Security forces faced challenges in managing the crowds, who breached security protocols and accessed the tarmac where the plane carrying Odinga’s remains had landed, a figure regarded as one of the country’s most prominent leaders. Raila, aged 80, passed away on October 15, 2025, in Kochi, Kerala, India.
