Kahiga Quits CoG Role Amid Fury Over Remarks On Raila’s Death

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has stepped down from his position as the Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) following public outrage regarding his comments about the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Acknowledging the significant public backlash his statements have caused, Kahiga expressed that he is fully accountable for both the actual and perceived consequences of his remarks by resigning from his leadership position within CoG.

"Recognizing the considerable public interest this matter has generated, I am accepting responsibility for the real and perceived implications of my statements, and consequently, I have decided to resign immediately as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors," he informed reporters in Nyeri on Wednesday. Kahiga clarified that his comments, which were recorded in a vernacular video that has been shared online, were "misinterpreted" and were never meant to celebrate the death of the veteran opposition leader. "I wish to extend my heartfelt apologies to our grieving nation, to the family of the Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga — Mama Ida Odinga, her children Rosemary, Junior, and Winnie, Hon. Senator Oburu Odinga, Hon. MP Ruth Odinga, and the extended family, the ODM fraternity, the Luo Nation, and all Kenyans — for any distress my comments may have caused," he stated. Political uncertainty The Nyeri Governor elaborated that his remarks were made during a burial in his home village on Tuesday, stressing that his intention was to address the political uncertainty that has arisen following Odinga’s passing, rather than to trivialize the tragedy. "My comments were not celebratory in nature. What I intended to convey is that under the current broad-based government, we have witnessed uneven development, and politically, the loss of the Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister compels everyone to reassess their strategies," he explained. He further noted that his words were meant in the spirit of the saying ‘God takes the best’, emphasizing that the video circulating online did not accurately reflect the complete context of his statements.
