Kenya Pipeline Privatization Expected to Conclude by March, According to State
The Government has designated March 2026 as the target month for finalizing the privatization of the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) via an initial public offering (IPO) on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).
As per a notice issued by the Privatization Commission, this process follows the approval from both the Cabinet and the National Assembly under the Privatization Act of 2005, thereby allowing the state to divest part of its ownership in the state-owned entity. "In light of the Cabinet's endorsement of the Privatization Method for the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Limited, the subsequent presentation of the necessary report to the National Assembly, and its approval on October 1, 2025, the Privatization Commission hereby announces the sanctioned transaction," the notice indicated. The government intends to divest 65 percent of its shareholding in KPC, a strategy anticipated to generate over Sh100 billion. Following the IPO, the state will maintain a 35 percent interest in the corporation. KPC, which is responsible for the transportation and distribution of petroleum products throughout Kenya and to neighboring markets such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is currently entirely owned by the government, with 99.9 percent held by the National Treasury and 0.1 percent by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum. The listing is designed to provide Kenyans with the chance to acquire a stake in one of the nation’s most lucrative state corporations, while also promoting transparency, corporate governance, and public engagement in key national assets.
