Kindiki Committee Adjusts Raila's Burial Date to Sunday After Reaching Consensus
The National Funeral Committee, responsible for organizing the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, has reached an agreement to modify his request to be interred within 72 hours of his passing, designating Sunday as the new burial date. During an announcement made on Wednesday evening, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, appointed as co-chair by President Ruto, stated that the government is collaborating closely with the Odinga family and the ODM party to ensure a respectful farewell that honors both his personal desires and his national significance.
"The family has communicated to this committee that it was the wish of the Honourable Raila Odinga to be buried as soon as possible following his death," Kindiki remarked, accompanied by Odinga’s brother, Senator Oburu, who is also co-chair of the committee.
"That timeline is 72 hours. We have thus agreed on a swift process that accommodates his wishes, the family's requirements, and the community traditions he valued."
Kindiki mentioned that a government delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has already left for India to assist in the repatriation of the former Prime Minister’s remains.
8:30 am Arrival
The aircraft transporting the body is anticipated to land in Nairobi at approximately 8:30 am on Thursday, where it will be welcomed by President William Ruto, members of the Odinga family, and high-ranking government officials.
Subsequently, the body will be taken to Parliament Buildings for public viewing from 12 noon to 5 pm before being transferred to Lee Funeral Home.
"Public mourning areas will be established in Nairobi and other major cities, equipped with large screens to allow Kenyans to follow the ceremonies and pay their respects," Kindiki added.
A state funeral service is scheduled to take place at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, with attendance from both local and international dignitaries. The service will adhere to full state protocol in acknowledgment of Odinga’s contributions to Kenya’s democracy.
