Kindiki: We Will Address Tea Cartels to Enhance Bonuses
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government's strong dedication to eradicating cartels within the tea sector to boost bonuses, following a year of reduced payments. Kindiki noted that, despite the sector experiencing significant growth over the past two years due to reforms implemented by the administration, farmers received diminished bonuses this year. The Deputy President made these remarks on Saturday during the Kipkelion East Economic Empowerment Engagement held in Londiani, Kericho County. "Numerous cartels are undermining efforts to streamline the tea industry. We will not permit them to continue obstructing our tea farmers. We are actively working to close all loopholes to eradicate these cartels," he stated. The Deputy President mentioned that earnings in the sector have increased from Sh138 billion in 2023 to Sh215 billion in 2024, asserting that the government will enhance efforts to solidify the progress already achieved, vowing a relentless campaign against the cartels. "I am diligently supporting the President in combating cartels in the sector, as they are detrimental to our farmers and profiting from efforts they have not contributed to. Just as we tackled cartels in the sugar sector, we will apply the same vigor, under the President's leadership, to eliminate them in the tea sector and ensure farmers receive their rightful earnings," the Deputy President declared. The Deputy President outlined key issues being addressed to guarantee improved bonuses in the forthcoming years, including enhancing governance and transparency in KTDA factories, boosting sales and marketing, and diversifying operations. "Moving forward, we must enhance transparency in factories and throughout the entire value chain. Farmers need accurate information regarding the marketing and sales of their tea. We must improve governance, as some tea factories in this region are facing governance challenges, which contribute to the problem," Kindiki emphasized.
