KMPDU Calls on House Committee to Address Extended Strike in Kiambu
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has formally requested the National Assembly to step in regarding the ongoing doctors’ strike in Kiambu County, alleging that the devolved government has violated several employment laws and collective agreements. In a petition dated October 14, directed to National Assembly Clerk Samuel Njoroge and Health Committee Chair James Nyikal, KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Atellah urged Parliament to initiate a formal investigation into what he described as "a persistent pattern of neglect and illegality" by the county. "The strike, which commenced on May 27, 2025, has now persisted for 138 days — marking one of the longest strikes in Kenya’s history," the petition states. "It was triggered by Kiambu County’s failure to adhere to multiple employment obligations, including the Return-to-Work Formula signed on May 8, 2024." The union indicated that doctors have endured months without salaries, promotions, or adequate medical coverage, despite numerous conciliation attempts and court decisions affirming the strike's legality. Justice Stephen Radido of the Employment and Labour Relations Court had mandated conciliatory discussions between the involved parties to resolve the deadlock. KMPDU also highlighted the failure to submit Social Health Insurance (SHI) premiums by the 9th of each month as mandated by law, a circumstance that it claimed has left doctors temporarily without insurance.
