KNH Sees Increase in Patients as Medics' Strike in Kiambu and Nairobi County Hospitals Takes Its Toll

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has called for a prompt resolution to the ongoing strike by healthcare workers in Nairobi and Kiambu counties, as a significant surge in patients seeking medical attention has overwhelmed the referral facility.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Richard Lesiyampe indicated that the hospital is facing an unprecedented surge of patients, many of whom are in critical condition, due to the paralysis of most public health facilities in the two counties caused by the strike. "KNH is experiencing a substantial rise in the number of patients seeking medical care, as a result of the ongoing industrial action in Kiambu and Nairobi counties," Lesiyampe remarked. "With the majority of public facilities unable to function fully, KNH has become the primary care center for patients requiring urgent treatment." He pointed out that the Maternity Department has been particularly affected, with the Labour Ward and Newborn Unit now operating at more than double their usual capacity. This situation has led to some adverse health outcomes for mothers and newborns who arrive too late for effective intervention, despite the hospital's diligent efforts. The influx has also placed immense pressure on essential hospital services, including operating theatres, the blood bank, and diagnostic units, compelling medical teams to work extended hours under significant stress. "Our staff are working relentlessly around the clock, but resources are stretched to their limits. KNH remains dedicated to providing care for all who enter our facility and will continue to do everything possible to save lives in these challenging circumstances," Lesiyampe emphasized. He urged both county governments and the striking health workers to swiftly resolve their disputes to alleviate the burden on the national referral facility and restore services closer to the patients' residences.
