KRA Achieves Record Sh85.2 Billion in Customs Revenue for September

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has achieved a remarkable Sh85.2 billion in customs revenue for the month of September, driven by increased petroleum and trade taxes.

This figure exceeds the previous record of Sh82.6 billion set in January 2025 and reflects a performance rate of 104.7 percent against a target of Sh81.34 billion. Trade taxes accounted for Sh51.7 billion, while petroleum levies contributed Sh33.4 billion during this period. "This achievement is the result of a series of reforms designed to improve the efficiency of revenue collection. The creation of a central release operations office has been particularly instrumental," stated KRA in a press release. "With this innovative approach, head verification officers work from a centralized location and randomly assign release stations to verify and clear goods. This method has reduced human interaction, leading to more impartial cargo release decisions and addressing potential revenue gaps. Furthermore, the reform has greatly enhanced the speed of cargo release processes," it continued. For the fiscal year 2025/26, KRA aims to collect Sh2.754 trillion to support government initiatives. The tax authority, which fell short of its revenue target in the 2024/25 financial year, has committed to utilizing technology and streamlining tax systems to enhance compliance and meet its ambitious revenue collection objectives this year.
