Members of Parliament Advocate for State Intervention in Kiambu's Struggling Health Sector

A group of six Members of Parliament representing Kiambu County has urged the national government to promptly take control of the county's failing health sector, accusing Governor Kimani Wamatangi of displaying arrogance, intimidation, and overseeing a systemic breakdown that is endangering lives. In a collective press release issued at the Parliament Buildings, the legislators asserted that the national government should manage Kiambu's health responsibilities until 2027, effectively removing Governor Wamatangi from these duties for the remainder of his term.   "When a devolved responsibility poses a risk to human life, the nation cannot turn a blind eye," stated Lari MP Joseph Mburu Kahangara, who presented the statement on behalf of his fellow lawmakers. "The only viable, life-preserving solution is for the national government to take over the county's health responsibilities until 2027." The MPs, including John Kiragu (Limuru), John Kawanjiku (Kiambaa), Elijah Njoroge Kururia (Gatundu North), Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town), and Gathua Wamacukuru (Kabete), lamented the state of collapsed hospitals, neglected patients, and an increasing death toll that has left residents vulnerable. They pointed to the decline of Kiambu Level 5 Hospital and Thika Level 4 Hospital, which were once vital referral centers, now referred to as mere shadows of their former selves, with empty wards, unused equipment, depleted pharmacies, and overwhelmed maternity units. "It has become tragically common to witness relatives transporting their loved ones from one ward to another in search of assistance that is never provided," remarked Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia. "Numerous families are compelled to hire private ambulances to Nairobi, Machakos, or Murang’a far too frequently, with patients collapsing and dying en route." The crisis, the MPs indicated, arises from extended doctors' strikes instigated by Governor Wamatangi's purported hardline approach, threats against unions, and refusal to engage in negotiations.
