Nairobi County faces scrutiny following a gas explosion in Huruma that resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and left 80 families without homes

At least eight lives have been lost, with ten others sustaining injuries, while nearly 80 families have been rendered homeless after a fire devastated homes in the Madoya slums of Huruma, Nairobi County.

The blaze, which was reportedly ignited by a gas explosion, swept through the area on Thursday night, leaving behind charred remnants as a testament to the devastation. One of the victims shared the traumatic experience of losing several family members despite the desperate rescue attempts made by neighbors. "When we got out, I searched for my family but couldn’t find all of them. My daughter was rushed to the hospital, but she passed away. The mother of my children and my other children were also missing in the inferno," Wycliffe Olumi recounted. Another survivor, Lynn Atieno, who is currently recovering from burns and other injuries, described her frantic effort to escape the fire. "The explosion was so sudden. I ran out, trying to escape, but the fire was everywhere. I had to go back looking for another way out," she stated. The victims have now criticized the emergency services from Nairobi County for their slow response, despite the proximity of a fire station. Residents assert that fire trucks did not arrive promptly, allegedly due to a lack of fuel, and have blamed local officials for failing to coordinate timely assistance. Digital creator Zek Mtetezi also expressed condolences to the victims but attributed the tragedy to regulatory failures. "I take this opportunity to condole with bereaved families in this fire tragedy that took the lives of our people and also destroyed their property in Huruma Ward. Unfortunately, gas explosions have become a rampage, killing people and pushing families back into poverty," he remarked. Mtetezi contended that government oversight regarding gas safety has been inadequate, highlighting shortcomings by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) and local vendors.
