National Government Urged To Transfer Management Of Kakamega Forest
Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has urged the national government to transfer the management and operation of the Kakamega tropical rainforest to the county government. After leading several officials in a 10 km marathon from Khayega market to the Isechero forest area in Shinyalu constituency, followed by tree planting, Governor Barasa remarked that devolving the management of the forest would enhance conservation efforts, boost tourism revenue, and foster community engagement. The Governor emphasized that the county possesses the capability and dedication to sustainably manage this unique rainforest ecosystem, which is the only tropical rainforest in Kenya. “This forest is not merely a natural heritage of Kakamega, but a national asset that has been underutilized. Similar to other counties that oversee national parks, we believe Kakamega should take responsibility for its own forest,” he stated. Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo encouraged the youth across the nation to take initiative in environmental conservation and protection. Ottichilo, who spoke to the athletes and residents at Shihuli trade center, the starting point of the 10km race, serves as the Chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee at the Council of Governors. During the event, Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula echoed the sentiments of Governor Barasa, highlighting that counties like Narok and Kajiado are effectively managing vital ecosystems such as the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and Amboseli National Park, respectively. “A similar approach can be implemented in Kakamega to ensure both ecological preservation and the economic empowerment of local communities,” he added.
