Obama Remembers Raila As A True Advocate For Democracy
Former President of the United States, Barack Obama, has paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, referring to him as a "true advocate for democracy" whose existence was characterized by sacrifice, bravery, and an unwavering dedication to the freedom of Kenya. In a condolence message, Obama praised Raila as "a child of independence" who faced decades of hardship and adversity in his quest for self-governance and justice for all Kenyans. "Raila Odinga was a true advocate for democracy. A child of independence, he faced decades of struggle and sacrifice for the greater cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya," Obama stated. The former US President, whose father originated from Kenya, reminisced about witnessing Raila’s profound patriotism and selflessness, emphasizing that he consistently prioritized the nation’s interests over his personal aspirations. "Time and again, I personally observed him prioritize the interests of his country over his own ambitions," Obama remarked, adding that Raila distinguished himself as a leader willing to seek peaceful reconciliation without sacrificing his principles. "Like few other leaders anywhere, he was prepared to choose the route of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his fundamental values," he continued. Obama expressed that Raila’s legacy would persist in inspiring not only Kenyans but also individuals throughout Africa and the globe. "Through his life, Raila Odinga set a standard not only for Kenyans but for people across Africa and around the globe. I know he will be greatly missed," he stated. He concluded by offering his and Michelle Obama’s sympathies to the Odinga family and the citizens of Kenya. "Michelle and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya," he concluded.
