Plotters of Sonko’s political demise are embarrassed as the High Court mandates the release of funds

When Mike Sonko, the former Governor of Nairobi, faced impeachment, it represented a political blow to his supporters. However, recognizing the politically motivated nature of the impeachment, Sonko and his allies have consistently believed in the possibility of life beyond politics.

In his own statements, Sonko expressed forgiveness towards those who orchestrated and executed his impeachment, while he continues to pursue his case at the East African Court of Justice. The impeachment, however, resulted in the freezing of his bank accounts, with allegations that the funds were derived from criminal activities. Recently, the High Court has rejected an application from the Asset Recovery Agency (ARA) to confiscate Ksh 537 million from his accounts. It was claimed that the funds were proceeds of crime and should be surrendered to the State. In a ruling delivered on October 1, 2025, Justice Nixon Sifuna dismissed ARA’s request to seize the total amount of Ksh 574,258,398.74. Justice Sifuna determined that ARA did not present sufficient evidence to connect Sonko to any illicit financial activities. The court ordered the immediate release of the previously frozen bank accounts. Throughout the trial, Sonko submitted evidence that the court examined thoroughly, demonstrating that he had been involved in business activities even prior to his tenure as the Governor of Nairobi City County. The Court found that Sonko was engaged in the sale of real estate assets, which consistently generated cash and other funds deposited into his account. It is now evident that the case was initiated by the former government as a means to oust Sonko from his role as Nairobi's governor.
