Political fireworks anticipated at the funeral of Dalmas
The funeral of the late former Cabinet minister Dalmas Otieno, a highly regarded statesman who served under three administrations—President Moi, Kibaki, and Uhuru—has become more than merely a personal loss for his family and constituents; it represents a loss for the entire nation. This event is shaping up to be a unique occasion of national political unity, expected to attract prominent leaders from both the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and the opposition Azimio la Umoja movement or Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The anticipated reunion of President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, along with ODM leader Raila Odinga and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, underscores Otieno’s legacy in Kenyan politics and his remarkable ability to bridge partisan divides. Dalmas’s political journey spanned several decades, characterized by a steadfast commitment to public service. He held significant ministerial roles under President Moi, including Labour and Transport, and later served as the Minister for Public Service under President Kibaki. His most recent public appointment was under President Uhuru Kenyatta, who designated him as Vice Chair of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), reflecting the trust and respect he commanded even in his later years. Family sources have indicated the distinguished guests anticipated at the funeral, and the police have been informed accordingly, with the Rongo security team enhancing patrols yesterday. Uhuru’s expected attendance at the funeral, accompanied by his close associates such as David Murathe and Raphael Tuju, signifies not only loyalty but also the respect Otieno earned across various administrations. “We learned a great deal from Dalmas,” remarked Owalo. Tuju also shared complimentary sentiments: “He was a perceptive leader.” What stands out is how Otieno succeeded in gaining the admiration of political figures with often opposing ideologies. Ayacko described him as a “political icon and force who executed his role with skill and audacity.”
