Pressure is increasing on the TSC to transfer Rebecca Chawiya, the principal of Ack Rae Girls High School, due to allegations of illegal levies and mismanagement of school resources
As the third term approaches its conclusion, there are speculations and expectations that Rae Girls High School will appoint a new principal for the first term of 2026. Parents express a strong desire for Principal Rebecca's name to be at the top of the transfer list. The parents have now stated that if the TSC is unable to act and fails to transfer her, they will resort to taking matters into their own hands by preventing her from accessing the school in January. But what could be the underlying reasons for the parents and stakeholders' discontent with the principal? Firstly, she is perceived as a lone decision-maker who does not seek consultation before making significant decisions. Her leadership approach is characterized by authoritarianism, intimidation, and threats directed at those who hold differing opinions. What concerns the parents the most is her ability to coerce both the board and the Parents' Association into approving illegal actions. According to sources, the principal implemented a school fee increase in a rather cunning manner. Last year, parents contributed Sh5,000 each for the construction of a dormitory. It is crucial to note that this dormitory has yet to materialize. Consider that Sh5,000 multiplied by 1,500 parents amounts to a staggering Sh7.5 million. This year, they have introduced an additional fee of Sh5,000, labeled as a development and activity fee. Furthermore, parents are also paying a Sh3,000 remedial fee. Thus, the total of Sh8,000 multiplied by 1,500 students equals Sh12 million. Is this not a blatant act of theft? The EACC is now being urged to investigate how this Sh12 million was mismanaged and ended up in the hands of individuals. The parents are extremely frustrated with the principal and are now advocating for the appointment of a new leader, referred to as the "daughter of the soil."
