Private Courier Companies Encroach on PCK’s Domestic Parcel Market

The volume of domestic parcels managed by the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) decreased by 12 percent to 141,932 during the period from April to June this year (Q1), a decline from 145,627 in Q1, as private courier operators gained ground.

Recent statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) indicate that private parcel service providers processed 3 million parcels in Q2, an increase from 2.76 million in Q1. In contrast, the number of international outgoing parcels also saw a reduction, dropping to 13,020 from 111,850, while PCK’s international parcel count fell to 107,035 from 108,416. PCK has recently encountered significant competition from companies such as Kilimall, Jumia, Instagram, and Facebook. These platforms have gained popularity for providing faster and more efficient services through private enterprises compared to those offered by government-owned entities. Additionally, the corporation has faced criticism for delivering substandard services, which has led to customer attrition in favor of private firms. Nevertheless, the data reveals that the volume of domestic letters processed by PCK increased by 19.5 percent to 174,057 in Q2, up from 145,627 in Q1.
