Raila Odinga Laid To Rest With 17-Gun Salute And Air Force Fly-Past In State Burial

The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was honored on Saturday with a 17-gun salute and a fly-past by the Kenya Air Force during his state burial at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

Odinga, who passed away on October 15 in Kochi, India, at the age of 80, was given full military honors in acknowledgment of his significant contributions to Kenya’s political development and his long-standing fight for democracy and justice. In accordance with Kenya’s military customs, a 21-gun salute is designated for a sitting president, while former presidents receive 19 rounds. Odinga was honored with 17 rounds, highlighting his remarkable position as a national leader and statesman. The burial service, officiated by the Anglican Church of Kenya, commenced with the national anthem, followed by officers from the Kenya Navy performing the ceremonial gun salute. Shortly thereafter, a solitary military bugler played the Last Post — a solemn tune that signifies the conclusion of a soldier’s service. Since his demise, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have overseen all state protocols, including the state funeral service held on Friday, which was attended by thousands, including Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Ethiopia’s President Taye Atske Selassie, Tanzania’s Vice President Philip Mpango, and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete. 7-day mourning President William Ruto presided over the State Funeral, accompanied by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, and other high-ranking dignitaries. In the wake of Odinga’s passing, President Ruto proclaimed seven days of national mourning, referring to him as “a foremost statesman and one of Africa’s greatest sons.” In a national address delivered from State House on October 15, President Ruto declared that the national flag would be flown at half-mast throughout the country and at all Kenyan missions abroad in tribute to the late opposition leader.
