Reasons for Matiang’i to Establish a Regionally Supported Party

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has recommended that presidential aspirant Fred Matiang’i create his own political party.

During a local television interview on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Nyutu urged the presidential candidate to initially establish a political entity that would garner support from his region, given the ethnic dynamics of Kenyan politics. “Fred Matiang’i is reluctant to form his own party. He prefers to rely on the Jubilee party. Although he is a presidential candidate, he is not inclined to create a party. Matiang’i should have established a party that enjoys backing from the Gusii region first,” he remarked. “We cannot ignore the political realities in our nation. The majority of the parties we have are based on ethnicity, and they are closely linked to their leaders. “For example, ODM’s most robust support base is in Luo Nyanza, with Raila Odinga as its leader. The PAA led by Kingi has its strongest backing from Kilifi,” he continued. However, his views were rejected by Soy MP David Kiplagat, who criticized the senator for regionalizing national politics and creating divisions among Kenyans. “This is an effort to fragment Kenyans into regions and suggest that individuals must align with a specific group or area. We are a united nation known as Kenyans, and when we elect a president, it is to ensure he serves as a unifying figure. It is regrettable that there are still individuals promoting the narrow perspectives of regionalism,” he asserted.
