Ruto Advocates for a Stronger ODM While Remaining Within Government

President William Ruto has committed to safeguarding the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) from individuals attempting to undermine it internally, pledging to honor the legacy of the late Raila Odinga by maintaining the strength and integrity of his political party.

During Odinga’s national funeral service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo on Sunday, Ruto stated that his administration is dedicated to ensuring that ODM — now a component of his inclusive government — continues to be a robust, dynamic, and esteemed political entity. Ruto assured that under his leadership, ODM would not be diminished or infiltrated by what he referred to as political opportunists. "What I cannot accept, in tribute to this hero of ours — and I will do everything within my power, may God assist me — is to prevent those who wish to uproot the ODM party and play the opposition role outside. That will not be feasible," Ruto asserted. The Head of State guaranteed ODM members that his government would honor the party’s autonomy and promote its unity, cautioning those who seek to divide it for political advantage. "I recognize that I am the leader of UDA, but I want to reassure ODM members — in accordance with Baba’s wishes — that we will respect and support ODM to maintain its cohesion," he remarked. "ODM must remain strong as we approach 2027 because that is essential for establishing a strong government. Political parties are the bedrock of democracy, and the strength of ODM is of great significance to me." ODM Government The President commended the ongoing collaboration between ODM and the ruling coalition, expressing pride that "ODM is now an integral part of the Government of the Republic of Kenya." "ODM will either lead the next government or be a participant in it." Ruto disclosed that when he contacted Odinga regarding the inclusion of ODM in the government, the seasoned opposition leader did not impose any conditions.
