Ruto Reveals Raila’s Final Weeks Of Illness And The Decision To Evacuate Him

President William Ruto has disclosed that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga faced a prolonged and challenging struggle with a severe health issue in the weeks preceding his death, outlining the efforts made by his family and the government to obtain specialized treatment overseas.

Speaking on Sunday prior to his burial, Ruto stated that Odinga’s health had significantly declined over the last six weeks, necessitating his search for medical care in Dubai and other international medical facilities. "The last one and a half months were extremely challenging. Each time I met Baba, his voice was strained. He consistently informed me that he felt weak due to the medication he was receiving, which raised my concerns," Ruto reminisced.

As per the President, Odinga communicated to him that medical professionals in Dubai and American hospitals had voiced worries regarding his deteriorating health, leading his medical team — headed by his long-time physician Dr. Oluoch Olunya — to frequently modify his treatment regimen. Despite his health challenges, Ruto noted that Odinga remained actively involved in national matters. While participating in the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, Ruto mentioned that he maintained regular communication with Odinga to keep track of his health status. "Upon my return from New York, he informed me, ‘Bill, I am in Malindi. The doctors have advised me to rest, but I will return on Tuesday,’" Ruto recounted. The two leaders ultimately convened at Odinga’s residence in Karen, Nairobi, where Mama Ida Odinga hosted a family dinner that was attended by Odinga’s elder brother, Dr. Oburu Odinga. It was during this gathering, Ruto stated, that the decision was made to send the opposition leader abroad for advanced medical treatment. Karen meeting "He shared with us how he was feeling, and we all concurred that we did not want any uncertainty regarding his health. We assured him that the government would support whatever treatment he required. Initially, he mentioned Germany and then China, but in the end, he opted for India," Ruto disclosed.
