Senator Calls for Comprehensive Overhaul at KeNHA Regarding Weighbridge Corruption

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has expressed concern over purported corruption associated with the nation’s mobile weighbridges, urging the government to reassess the Kenya National Highways Authority's (KeNHA) responsibilities in their management.

In a statement released on Saturday, Senator Ole Kina indicated that the operations of weighbridges — especially during nighttime — have turned into a hotbed for corruption, unjust targeting of truck drivers, and unwarranted delays that adversely affect trade. "Kenya must reconsider the function of the Kenya National Highways Authority. Nighttime operations at mobile weighbridges have become closely linked with corruption — targeting truckers, delaying shipments, and undermining trade," the Senator remarked. "Rather than providing oversight, they are hindering economic development." The Narok Senator emphasized the necessity to "dismantle and reconstruct a transparent system." His comments arise amidst ongoing governmental initiatives to expand and modernize the weighbridge infrastructure. 28 New Weighbridges In February, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced the deployment of twenty-eight new weighbridges throughout the country — both static and virtual — as part of a larger effort to improve transport efficiency and safeguard national roads. As per a notice released by the Ministry of Transport at that time, the new static weighbridges are situated at Kikambala along the A7, Kanyonyo on the A3, Awendo on the A1, Dongo Kundu on the Mombasa Southern Bypass (A8), and Laisamis on the A2, among other sites. These installations are integral to a broader governmental strategy aimed at modernizing weighbridge operations and enforcing axle load limits to avert road deterioration. In December 2024, KeNHA declared that it had fully automated weighbridges along the Northern Corridor — a vital transport route connecting the Port of Mombasa to Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan — to alleviate congestion and improve transparency.
