Teachers Urge Restoration of Medical Allowance Prior to Transition to SHIF
Educators from Nyeri and Murang’a counties have appealed to the government to restore their medical allowance if the plans to fully transition them to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) are put into action. During a press conference held in Nyeri, the teachers voiced their concerns regarding the sufficiency of specialized care available in public hospitals, cautioning that a complete shift to SHIF could adversely impact their access to quality healthcare. "As educators of this nation, we wish to inform the government that if they proceed with the transition to SHIF, our medical allowance must be reinstated. This will allow us to pursue specialized treatment in private facilities, where such services may not be accessible in public hospitals," stated Antony Gitonga, a spokesperson for the teachers. Gitonga highlighted that under the existing MINET medical scheme, numerous female teachers are already facing difficulties in obtaining specialized care. "Our female colleagues are struggling due to the absence of specialists in the hospitals covered by our current plan. We are concerned that this situation will deteriorate under SHIF. If that is the case, please restore our allowance so we can seek treatment on our own terms," he further remarked. The teachers also called on the government to confirm the employment of junior secondary school (JSS) teachers who are currently working under internship contracts. They cautioned that failing to permanently employ these teachers would threaten the educational experience of students advancing to senior secondary level. "There are over 20,000 teachers on internship in JSS. The government must confirm their employment before their students transition to senior secondary," they emphasized. Regarding union matters, the teachers urged the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) national office to publish the schedule for next year’s union elections, asserting that early notification would provide aspiring candidates with sufficient time to prepare and campaign.
