Three Bodies Recovered Following Boat Capsizing During Water Sports Event

After an intense three-day search, the remains of three individuals who went missing when their racing boat capsized during the East Africa Ocean Festival have been retrieved from the Indian Ocean near Tudor Creek, Mombasa.

The incident took place on Friday evening when a boat carrying 22 participants overturned as it approached the finish line. The vessel reportedly capsized unexpectedly, leading to a desperate rescue operation that managed to save 19 individuals. In the wake of this tragedy, the festival was promptly suspended. One of the missing bodies was located on Sunday evening, while the other two were discovered early Monday morning during a coordinated operation involving multiple agencies, spearheaded by the Kenya Navy. Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki visited the site on Sunday to offer condolences to the bereaved families. He reassured them that the rescue team would exert every effort until all missing persons were accounted for. Following his attendance at a youth and women empowerment event in Nyali, he met with the families, promising government assistance to ensure that the victims receive a respectful farewell. “We have been summoned here by your local MP Mohamed Machele, in light of this tragic event. I would also like to acknowledge MP Badi Twalib, whose Jomvu constituency has been significantly impacted,” stated the Deputy President. Prof. Kindiki expressed gratitude to all agencies involved in the rescue efforts and conveyed his sorrow regarding the incident, vowing accountability and compensation for the families affected. “If any errors occurred, we sincerely apologize and assure you that such an event will not recur. The government will guarantee compensation once all bodies are recovered,” he pledged. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir called for calm and empathy, urging the public to grant families the space they need to mourn. “As we stand here assigning blame, let us also remember that some of our community members need to lay their loved ones to rest,” Governor Nassir appealed.
