United Opposition Distances Itself From Kahiga’s Remarks On Raila

The United Opposition has distanced itself from the recent comments made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga concerning the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which have elicited widespread condemnation throughout the nation.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Mukhisa Kituyi, the coalition characterized Kahiga’s remarks as "the very definition of hate speech as explicitly defined and outlined in our Constitution under Article 33." The coalition further emphasized that Kahiga is not affiliated with their alliance, urging the public to regard his statements as personal opinions and not reflective of the opposition's views. "For the record, Governor Kahiga was elected on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party ticket. He is not a member of the United Opposition or any party within our coalition," the statement partially read. "Governor Kahiga’s reprehensible sentiments should, unanimously, be entirely condemned by all Kenyans, beginning with his UDA Party Leader, President William Samoei Ruto, the party’s Chairperson, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, and Secretary-General, Senator Hassan Omar." This statement follows Kahiga’s resignation as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) amid escalating outrage over his comments regarding Odinga’s death. In light of the significant public backlash, Kahiga stated he was taking "full responsibility for both the actual and perceived impact" of his remarks by resigning from his leadership role. During a burial ceremony in Kieni, Nyeri County, Kahiga had stated that the death of the former Prime Minister had "leveled the political playing field" for the Mt. Kenya region, comments that rapidly went viral and incited a nationwide uproar. Kahiga later clarified that his remarks were intended as political reflection and were not meant to mock or trivialize Odinga’s passing. The controversy arises as the nation observes a period of national mourning following Odinga’s death on October 15 while receiving treatment in India.
