Waiguru Denounces Kahiga’s ‘Callous’ Remarks Rejoicing Over Raila’s Death

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has criticized Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for comments made in a viral video that celebrated the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a statement released on Monday, Waiguru labeled Kahiga’s remarks as "callous and irresponsible," asserting that they do not represent the sentiments of the leaders or the residents of the Mt. Kenya region. "They do not reflect the views of the leadership or the people of Mt. Kenya. Let us be clear: politics should not override basic decency." Waiguru stressed that Raila’s death is a time for national reflection and unity, rather than political discord. "For the record, as a community, we stand with the rest of Kenya in mourning a great statesman, Raila Odinga, CGH," she added. The viral video, which has incited nationwide outrage, features Governor Kahiga speaking at a local event where he reportedly trivialized Raila’s death, suggesting it relieved the Mt. Kenya region from the isolation created by Raila and President William Ruto. His remarks have faced severe backlash from both political factions. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) also responded, calling for restraint and forgiveness while denouncing the governor’s comments as insensitive. "During this time of mourning, following the loss of our Party Leader Raila Odinga, we pray for the Governor of Nyeri, Mr. Mutahi Kahiga, that God forgives him for the statements he made regarding the passing of our Leader," the party expressed in a statement. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi also condemned Kahiga’s remarks, labeling them as divisive and unworthy of national leadership. "Let’s call out such foolish leaders like Kahiga Mutahi," Amisi remarked. "No Kikuyu will harbor hatred towards a Luo because of your words, and no Luo will despise a Kikuyu due to your statements. In essence, you are a disgrace.
