What You Should Know Regarding Kenya’s Updated Fireworks Licensing Regulations

 


The government has implemented stricter regulations concerning fireworks displays in anticipation of this year’s Diwali and Hindu New Year celebrations, mandating that all individuals and organizations secure a license prior to illuminating the sky.

Who Requires a Fireworks License Licenses are now compulsory for all fireworks displays, whether they are public or private, including those hosted by clubs, hotels, temples, schools, and event venues. No fireworks may be exhibited without prior approval from an Inspector of Explosives. Approved Locations and Time Restrictions The Ministry has indicated that fireworks will only be permitted at authorized locations, such as: Clubs and hotels Temples and religious centers Sports fields or school premises Any other location authorized by an Inspector of Explosives Displays must occur between 7 PM and 11 PM on the approved dates — Friday, October 17 to Monday, October 20, 2025. Technical and Safety Standards Under the new operational guidelines: Display shells in urban or developed areas must not exceed four inches in diameter, unless specifically exempted by the Inspector of Explosives. Only qualified, experienced, and sober individuals are allowed to handle or launch aerial shells and other fireworks. Vendors are prohibited from selling fireworks to children under 13 years of age, as this constitutes an offense under the Explosives Act, Cap 115 of the Laws of Kenya. Permits for Vendors and Display Organizers The sale and use of aerial display fireworks — including shells, rockets, Roman candles, and cakes — will be restricted to individuals holding valid display permits endorsed by an Inspector.
